A fuel tanker explosion in the early hours of Thursday, June 4, 2026, has claimed two lives and left a trail of destruction in the Adubinsu community in the Afigya Kwabre South District of the Ashanti Region, throwing residents into a state of grief and shock.

According to eyewitness Daniel Owusu, the tanker was travelling from Edwenase toward Adubinsu when the driver lost control, allegedly due to brake failure.

The vehicle somersaulted before exploding in a devastating fireball that rapidly engulfed surrounding properties.

The driver, identified as Abass Toure, a resident of Adubinsu, died instantly in the inferno. His mate, who sustained severe burns in the explosion, was rushed to the Tafo Government Hospital but could not be saved and was later pronounced dead.

Beyond the human toll, the explosion carved a path of destruction through the area.

Mamponteng Fire Commander DOII Akua Brago confirmed that seven container shops lining the roadside were completely gutted by the fire, while a Ford vehicle parked near a house was also burnt beyond repair. A nearby house was similarly caught in the blaze.

The Ghana National Fire Service received a distress call at 12:05 am and had personnel on the scene by 12:25 am. Firefighters worked swiftly to bring the blaze under control and prevent it from spreading further into the surrounding community.

Personnel from the Ghana Police Service were also deployed to manage the situation on the ground.

The body of the deceased driver is expected to be laid to rest in accordance with Islamic burial rites, according to local sources.

The Adubinsu community is left mourning the sudden and violent loss of two of its own, as the full impact of the tragedy continues to sink in.
