A nurse at the Tema Community 22 Polyclinic in Ashaiman has been assaulted by a patient’s relative after asking him to vacate the ward at the close of visiting hours — an incident that has sparked widespread public anger and renewed concerns about the safety of healthcare workers in Ghana.

The attack occurred on June 2 at the polyclinic, where visiting hour regulations are enforced as a standard measure to protect patient rest and minimise the risk of infections. The nurse was simply carrying out her duties when the relative turned on her.

Video footage of the incident circulated widely on Thursday, June 4, and quickly drew a torrent of condemnation from the public, fellow health workers and nursing associations. Fellow Nurses Africa was among the professional groups that spoke out forcefully, calling for the immediate arrest and prosecution of the individual responsible.

While the overwhelming response was one of outrage, a small number of voices acknowledged the immense emotional pressure that relatives of patients can sometimes face — though even those sympathetic to that perspective stopped short of justifying the violence.

As of late Thursday, an unconfirmed report indicated that the suspect had been taken into custody, though authorities had yet to officially confirm the arrest.

The incident has added fresh urgency to a growing conversation about the alarming frequency of violence directed at healthcare workers across Ghana, with many in the medical community calling for stronger protections and stricter consequences for those who attack staff simply doing their jobs.
