Ayawaso East Member of Parliament Baba Jamal has stepped forward with an immediate financial commitment to traders whose livelihoods were wiped out in a devastating fire at the Nima Market in Accra, pledging GH¢5,000 to each affected victim as an interim measure while urging the government to go further with a permanent solution.

The lawmaker made the announcement after visiting the scene of the destruction, where he witnessed firsthand the scale of the damage inflicted on traders and their businesses.

“Seeing that this is a serious tragedy that affected our people last night, my MCE and NADMO officials all rushed here and were able to help. But you can see that some serious devastation has taken place,” he said, his words reflecting the grim picture that greeted him on arrival.

Mr Jamal said a number of affected traders had already submitted their details to him, paving the way for the disbursement of the promised funds. He was clear that the gesture, while personal, was intended to provide immediate breathing room for those who had lost everything.

“A few people who have been affected have given me their list. And so, on my own, I want to offer GH¢5,000 to each of the victims in the interim,” he stated, extending his heartfelt sympathies to all those who had suffered losses in the blaze.

Beyond the immediate relief, the MP seized the moment to push for a longer-term structural response, appealing to the government to invest in the construction of a modern market facility for the constituency — one that would not only improve trading conditions but also reduce the vulnerability of traders to future fire disasters.

He broadened his call beyond government, urging the president and the nation at large to rally behind the affected community during what he described as an extremely difficult period.
