Asamoah Gyan named Black Stars ambassador ahead of 2026 World Cup

Ghana football icon Asamoah Gyan is set to return to the national football scene in a new capacity after the Ghana Football Association announced his appointment as ambassador for the country’s national teams and Colts football structure.
The former Black Stars captain will officially be unveiled during a ceremony on Wednesday, 20 May 2026, at the Pelican Hotel in Accra, in an event expected to bring together football administrators, former players, corporate partners and members of the media.
The appointment forms part of the Ghana Football Association’s broader efforts to build national enthusiasm ahead of Ghana’s campaign at the 2026 FIFA World Cup in North America.
Widely regarded as one of Ghana’s greatest footballers, Gyan remains the Black Stars’ all-time leading scorer with 51 goals. Over an international career spanning more than a decade, he became a central figure in Ghana’s rise on the global stage.
The former Sunderland forward represented Ghana at three FIFA World Cups, in 2006, 2010 and 2014,this etched his name into history by scoring Ghana’s first-ever World Cup goal against the Czech Republic at the tournament in Germany.
Although remembered for the dramatic penalty miss against Uruguay during the quarter-final clash at the 2010 World Cup, Gyan’s passion, leadership and contribution to Ghanaian football have continued to earn admiration from supporters both at home and abroad.
In his new role, the 40-year-old is expected to lead promotional campaigns, support fan engagement activities and help strengthen corporate partnerships ahead of the World Cup.
He will also represent the GFA at official events while supporting the growth and promotion of Ghana’s national teams and youth football system.
The move highlights the association’s intention to tap into Gyan’s experience, influence and popularity as the Black Stars prepare for another appearance on football’s biggest stage.
