NSA Director Yaw Ampofo Ankrah Backs André Ayew for 2026 World Cup Squad

Ghana’s Director-General of the National Sports Authority, Yaw Ampofo Ankrah, has thrown his support behind veteran forward André Ayew, insisting the former Black Stars captain deserves a place in Ghana’s squad for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
Ayew, 36, is currently without a club after leaving Dutch side NAC Breda following their relegation. The experienced attacker has not played for Ghana since the team’s disappointing campaign at the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations, where the Black Stars suffered another group-stage exit.
Despite questions surrounding his future with the national team, Ampofo Ankrah believes Ayew’s leadership and experience remain crucial for Ghana ahead of football’s biggest tournament.
Speaking to Sporty FM, the NSA chief said he would be “extremely surprised” if Ayew is left out of at least the provisional squad expected to be announced by head coach Carlos Queiroz on June 1.
“Beyond his recent solid strides to regain fitness, Dede’s immense experience would be a huge asset for Ghana at the biggest football gathering of all time,” Ampofo Ankrah said.
Calls for Ayew’s return have grown louder in recent months, particularly following his brief spell in the Netherlands. Supporters backing his inclusion point to his leadership qualities and extensive tournament pedigree.
Ayew remains one of Ghana’s most experienced international players, having featured at the 2010, 2014 and 2022 FIFA World Cups. Across those tournaments, he has made 17 appearances, scored once and established himself as one of the country’s most recognisable football figures.
The Black Stars are preparing for their fifth appearance at the FIFA World Cup and have been drawn in Group L alongside England national football team, Croatia national football team and Panama national football team.
Ghana will begin their campaign against Panama on June 18 before facing England on June 23 and Croatia on June 27.
