This season’s performance is one to forget – Asante Kotoko after eighth-place finish in the GPL

Asante Kotoko have issued a strongly-worded statement apologising to supporters after what the club described as a deeply disappointing 2025/26 Ghana Premier League (GPL) campaign.
The Kumasi-based giants ended the season in eighth place, a result the club admitted fell “far below the standards, expectations, and ambitions” associated with one of Ghana’s most successful football institutions.
In a statement released by the club’s Board and Management on 25 May 2026, Kotoko acknowledged the frustration among fans and promised decisive action ahead of next season.
“Football always offers another opportunity to rise again,” the statement read. “However, this season’s performance is one to forget.”
The club said measures would be taken to restore Kotoko to the top of Ghanaian and African football, signalling that changes could be expected in the coming months.
The Porcupine Warriors also reserved special praise for their supporters, many of whom travelled across the country to back the team despite inconsistent performances throughout the campaign.
“Your unwavering commitment and passion remain the backbone of this club,” the statement said. “We sincerely apologise for the disappointment and frustration caused.”
Asante Kotoko’s eighth-place finish marks one of the club’s poorest league performances in recent years and is likely to intensify pressure on the technical team and management structure.
The season performance resulted in the sacking of Coach Karim Zito, and subsequent interim coach Prince Yaw who took over from Zito. Kotoko were left with no choice than to finish the season with their Junior team coach Hamza Obeng.
Despite the setback, club officials insisted they remain committed to rebuilding a stronger and more competitive side capable of challenging for honours once again.
Ending the statement with the club’s traditional slogan, “Together we shall rise again,”management attempted to strike a hopeful tone as attention now turns to a crucial off-season in Kumasi.
