GFA contacts Jamaica for extra pre World Cup friendly

Ghana Football Association has opened talks with Jamaica over a possible international friendly as preparations gather pace for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
The proposed fixture forms part of Ghana’s final build-up plans ahead of the tournament in the United States, Canada and Mexico, with the Black Stars technical team seeking more opportunities to assess the squad before the competition begins.
Ghana have already faced several high-profile opponents in recent months, including Austria and Germany Otto Addo’s time in charge. However, a disappointing run of results ultimately led to Addo’s departure.
The Black Stars suffered another setback over the weekend, falling 2-0 to Mexico national football team at the Estadio Cuauhtémoc in Puebla in a match overseen by assistant coach Desmond Ofei.
A friendly against Wales national football team is already scheduled for 2 June at Cardiff City Stadium, but reports suggest newly appointed head coach Carlos Queiroz has requested an additional game to further evaluate his players and tactical options before the World Cup.
That request has reportedly led to advanced discussions over a possible meeting with Jamaica national football team, popularly known as the Reggae Boyz.
The Black Stars are hoping to avoid another disappointing World Cup campaign after group-stage exits in both 2014 and 2022. Ghana’s best performance at the tournament remains their memorable run to the quarter-finals in South Africa in 2010.
At the 2026 edition, Ghana national football team have been drawn in Group L alongside Panama, England and Croatia.
Ghana will begin their campaign against Panama at BMO Field in Toronto on 17 June before taking on England in Boston six days later. Their final group-stage match will be against Croatia at Lincoln Financial Field in Philadelphia on 27 June.
