Godwin Attram backs Black Stars to defy odds at 2026 World Cup

Former Ghana striker Godwin Attram says he remains confident the Black Stars can progress beyond the group stage of the 2026 FIFA World Cup despite a worrying run of results in the build-up to the tournament.
Ghana head into the competition, which will be hosted across the United States, Canada and Mexico, without a victory in their last five preparatory matches, a run that has raised concerns among supporters over the team’s readiness for football’s biggest stage.
However, Attram believes the recent appointment of Portuguese coach Carlos Queirozcould provide the leadership and experience needed to revive the team’s fortunes.
“The FA did well to appoint him, and we hope that whatever the country wants, he will deliver,” Attram told Graphic Sports.
The Black Stars face a difficult challenge in Group L, where they have been drawn against England, Croatia and Panama. But Attram dismissed suggestions that Ghana could struggle to compete.
“Why not?” he said when asked about Ghana’s chances of reaching the knockout stage.
“At the end of the day, it’s just football, and if we prepare ourselves very well, in tune with whatever the players must do, I’m very sure we will qualify out of the group.”
Ghana are expected to intensify preparations with an international friendly against Waleson 2 June at Cardiff City Stadium.
The tournament will mark Ghana’s fifth appearance at the FIFA World Cup. The Black Stars are hoping to reach the knockout stages for the first time since their memorable run to the quarter-finals in 2010. They suffered group-stage exits in both 2014 and 2022.
Queiroz has already named a provisional 28-man squad, with the final list expected to be announced on 1 June.
Ghana open their Group L campaign against Panama on 17 June before taking on England on 23 June and Croatia on 27 June.
