2026 world cup: The experience within Black Stars squad is a bit dicey – Asamoah Gyan

Former Ghana captain Asamoah Gyan says the Black Stars have the talent and potential to impress at the 2026 FIFA World Cup, although he admits the squad may lack the experience needed for a deep run in the tournament.
Ghana, who are preparing for their fifth appearance at the World Cup, have been drawn in a challenging Group L alongside England, Croatia and Panama for the tournament set to be hosted across the United States, Canada and Mexico.
Speaking to 3Sports, Gyan expressed confidence in the quality emerging within the national team but acknowledged that the youthful squad would need guidance and support as they prepare for football’s biggest stage.
“We have the tools. We have young players coming up. The experience is a bit dicey. As somebody who has been in the game, we will do everything, we will give our support,” he said.
The former striker, Ghana’s all-time leading scorer and Africa’s top scorer in World Cup history, remains optimistic that the Black Stars can compete strongly despite concerns over experience within the current setup.
The team is currently in camp in Cardiff ahead of next month’s international friendly against Wales, with 13 players already training at Dragon Park on Monday.
Among those in camp are Jordan Ayew, Ernest Nuamah, Abdul Fatawu Issahaku and Brandon Thomas-Asante, while the remaining members of the 28-man provisional squad are expected to join the team in the coming days.
Ghana will open their World Cup campaign against Panama at BMO Field on 17 June before facing England at Gillette Stadium on 23 June. Their final group-stage match will be against Croatia at Lincoln Financial Field on 27 June.
The Black Stars will be hoping to reach the knockout stage for the first time since 2010 after suffering group-stage exits at the 2014 tournament in Brazil and the 2022 edition in Qatar.
