Jeremie Frimpong’s shock omission dominates Netherlands’ final World Cup squad announcement

Netherlands national football team head coach Ronald Koeman has unveiled his final squad for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, with the surprise omission of Jeremie Frimpong emerging as the biggest talking point ahead of the tournament.
Jeremie Frimpong, who was initially included in the Netherlands’ provisional 40-man squad, failed to make the final cut despite featuring regularly for Liverpool F.C. during the season.
The attacking full-back endured a difficult first campaign at Anfield following his move from Bayer 04 Leverkusen, managing only two goals and one assist in 35 appearances after previously enjoying a highly productive spell in Germany.
Koeman explained that tactical balance, consistency and current form influenced his final decision, with the Dutch coach opting for Crysencio Summerville instead.
“He has dealt with a lot of injuries, but I have also chosen someone else now: Summerville,” Koeman stated while explaining Frimpong’s omission.
“I like those kinds of players who are reliable in their football. He can play very well on the right side as well. He is very good in terms of his work ethic.”
Summerville’s Surprise Inclusion
The inclusion of Summerville has generated significant discussion among Dutch football supporters because the West Ham United F.C. winger is yet to make his senior debut for the Netherlands national team.
Koeman, however, appears convinced by the winger’s versatility, discipline and tactical understanding as the Dutch prepare for another major World Cup campaign.
Experienced Core Remains Intact
Despite the Frimpong setback, the Dutch squad still possesses a strong blend of experience and youthful quality.
Captain Virgil van Dijk leads the team alongside experienced forward Memphis Depay, although the striker is reportedly carrying an injury concern ahead of the tournament.
Other notable names in the squad include Frenkie de Jong, Ryan Gravenberch, Denzel Dumfries, Cody Gakpo and Jurriën Timber.
The Netherlands head into the tournament with confidence after completing an unbeaten qualification campaign.
Tough Group Stage Challenge Awaits
The Dutch have been drawn in Group F alongside Sweden, Japan and Tunisia national football teams.
With expectations rising once again around the Oranje, Koeman will be hoping his final selections can deliver a strong tournament performance and avoid the disappointments of previous major competitions.
