One Dead, Four Rescued After Storey Building Collapses in Adenta New Site
A search and rescue operation at Adenta New Site in the Greater Accra Region has ended with one fatality and four survivors after a two-storey apartment building caved in near Da Yesu Ase Supermarket during a heavy downpour on Wednesday evening.
The Ghana National Fire Service received a distress call at 6:36 pm and dispatched rescue teams from its National Headquarters, reinforced by personnel from the Legon and Abelemkpe Fire Stations, who arrived swiftly and immediately commenced operations.
Five occupants were found trapped beneath the rubble — three adults and two children.
They were identified as Margaret Kpeli, believed to be in her late 30s; Fred Atagba, also believed to be in his late 30s; a man identified only as Solomon; and two children, Seyeram Dzigda and David Dzigda.
In a coordinated effort that drew on the support of community members who assisted with initial rescue attempts, four of the five trapped occupants — Fred Atagba, Solomon, Seyeram Dzigda and David Dzigda — were pulled out alive, though all sustained injuries.
They were transported to the 37 Military Hospital for medical attention. In a lighter moment amid the grim operation, a dog that had also been trapped inside the collapsed structure was rescued alive.
Tragically, intensive efforts to reach the fifth occupant, Margaret Kpeli, ended in heartbreak.
She was retrieved from beneath the debris in an unconscious state and was later confirmed dead. Her remains were handed over to the Adenta District Police for preservation and further investigation.
The operation was officially concluded at 10:54 pm on Thursday night.
The Ghana National Fire Service commended community members for their early intervention and extended appreciation to all agencies whose collaboration made the operation possible, including the Ghana Police Service, medical personnel, and teams from the Legon and Abelemkpe Fire Stations.
The alleged children of the woman who lost her life in the two-storey building collapse at Adenta New Site were seen in tears as her lifeless body was retrieved from the debris and subsequently conveyed to the mortuary.
