2026 World Cup: Ghanaians are optimistic about the Black Stars – Asamoah Gyan

Former Ghana captain Asamoah Gyan says optimism is growing among supporters ahead of the 2026 FIFA World Cup, although he admits the Black Stars will carry significant expectations into the tournament.
Ghana will make their fifth appearance at the World Cup finals when the competition is hosted by the United States, Canada and Mexico. After suffering group-stage exits at the 2014 and 2022 editions, many fans are hopeful the four-time African champions can make a deeper run this time around.
“Ghanaians are optimistic, but there is pressure back home,” Gyan told SuperSport.
The former striker, who remains Ghana’s all-time leading goalscorer and Africa’s highest-scoring player in World Cup history, believes the national team has the potential to make a strong impression on football’s biggest stage.
While expressing confidence in Ghana’s prospects, Gyan also backed the continent’s representatives to perform well at the expanded tournament.
“Let’s see what happens, but I hope all the African teams will do well, and I wish them well,” he said.
The Black Stars are currently in the United States as preparations intensify ahead of their final warm-up match against Jamaica on 10 June.
Drawn in a challenging Group L, Ghana will begin their campaign against Panama on 17 June at BMO Field before taking on England six days later at Gillette Stadium. Their group-stage journey concludes with a clash against Croatia on 27 June.
The Black Stars will be aiming to reach the knockout rounds for the first time since their memorable run to the quarter-finals at the 2010 World Cup in South Africa, where they came within a penalty shootout of becoming the first African nation to reach the semi-finals.
With anticipation building at home and expectations rising, Ghana’s quest for World Cup redemption is set to be one of the country’s most closely followed sporting stories in the coming year.
