Amad struck in stoppage time to hand Ivory Coast a dramatic 1-0 victory over Ecuador and secure Africa’s first win of the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

The Elephants appeared destined to begin their Group E campaign with a hard-fought draw after being repeatedly tested by a determined Ecuador side. But with just minutes remaining, Amad produced a moment of quality, firing home in the 90th minute to send Ivorian supporters into celebration and earn all three points.

The victory is a significant milestone for African football, marking the continent’s first triumph at the expanded 48-team tournament and providing an early boost to hopes of a strong African presence in the latter stages of the competition.

Ivory Coast, crowned African champions in 2023, were forced to dig deep for the result. Ecuador dominated large periods of the contest and came agonisingly close to taking the lead in the first half, striking the crossbar twice and creating several clear opportunities.

However, the Ivorians remained disciplined in defence and gradually grew into the match. Their patience was rewarded in dramatic fashion when Amad found the breakthrough moments before full-time, punishing Ecuador for their missed chances.

The result lifts Ivory Coast level with Germany at the top of Group E on three points. Earlier in the day, Germany produced the most emphatic result of the group so far with a 7-1 victory over Curacao.

With the World Cup expanded from 32 to 48 teams, Africa has a record ten representatives at this year’s tournament. Ivory Coast’s victory ensures the continent has its first win on the board after the opening round of fixtures.

South Africa, Morocco, Ivory Coast and Tunisia have already begun their campaigns, while Ghana, Egypt, Algeria, DR Congo and Cabo Verde are among the African nations still preparing to play their opening matches.

For Ivory Coast, this victory was not only a valuable three points but also a statement of intent, as the former African champions demonstrated resilience, composure and the ability to seize their moment on football’s biggest stage.
