Member of Parliament for Akwatia, Bernard Bediako Baidoo, believes Thomas Partey could hold the key to Ghana’s hopes of upsetting England when the Black Stars face the Three Lions in a crucial Group L clash at the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

The deputy captain is expected to return to the squad after missing Ghana’s opening 1-0 victory over Panama, where Caleb Yirenkyi’s late strike secured all three points.

Partey was unavailable for the match after Canadian authorities denied his visa application due to criminal charges pending against him in the United Kingdom. An emergency appeal to the Canadian Federal Court failed, forcing the experienced midfielder to miss the tournament opener.

With Ghana now preparing for a high-profile showdown against England at Gillette Stadium on 23 June, Baidoo believes Partey’s presence could significantly strengthen the Black Stars.

Speaking on Adom FM, the lawmaker said Ghana lacked the midfielder’s leadership, composure and experience in the centre of the pitch against Panama.

“Thomas Partey will be the difference-maker against England; he’s fired up and ready to take control of the game,” Baidoo said.

The 33-year-old is widely expected to return to the starting line-up as Ghana seek to build on their winning start to the tournament.

The Black Stars are second in Group L after their opening victory, while England top the standings following an entertaining 4-2 win over Croatia.

A positive result against the Three Lions would put Ghana in a strong position to reach the knockout stage of the expanded 48-team World Cup, with Carlos Queiroz’s side hoping to progress beyond the group phase for the first time since their memorable quarter-final run at the 2010 tournament in South Africa.

Ghana will conclude their group-stage campaign against Croatia four days after facing England.
