Black Stars captain Jordan Ayew says Ghana have the belief and confidence to challenge England as they prepare for a decisive Group L clash at the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

The Black Stars head into Tuesday’s encounter buoyed by a dramatic 1-0 victory over Panama, with Caleb Yirenkyi’s stoppage-time strike earning Ghana a winning start to their campaign.

While England arrive at the Gillette Stadium after an impressive 4-2 victory over Croatia, Ayew insists Ghana are not intimidated and remain focused on taking another significant step towards the knockout stage.

Speaking to Ghanafa.org, the captain stressed that the Black Stars are approaching the tournament with a game-by-game mentality.

“We have two important games left. We take it game by game,” Ayew said.

“We are focused on getting the three points in the next match, and after that we will think about the last game.”

The 34-year-old acknowledged England’s quality but believes the unpredictable nature of the World Cup gives every team a chance.

“It’s always difficult playing at the World Cup. There are no easy games, but we believe in ourselves, and we feel that anything is possible.”

A victory over England would put Ghana in a commanding position to qualify for the Round of 32 before their final group match against Croatia.

It would also extend the Black Stars’ impressive record of never losing their second match at a FIFA World Cup.

After making a winning start against Panama, confidence is growing within the Ghana camp, and Ayew believes the four-time African champions are ready to rise to the occasion against one of the tournament favourites.

With qualification for the knockout stages firmly within reach, the Black Stars know another positive result could mark a significant step towards ending their long wait for a return to the latter stages of the World Cup.
