Government releases GHc350 Million to support flood relief efforts

The government has released GH¢350 million from the Contingency Fund to support emergency flood relief and mitigation efforts following the recent floods that have affected several parts of the country.
The funds have been transferred to dedicated accounts established for the National Disaster Management Committee after President John Dramani Mahama directed Finance Minister Cassiel Ato Forson to mobilise resources for immediate disaster response and long-term flood prevention measures.
In compliance with Article 177 of Ghana’s 1992 Constitution, the Finance Minister first obtained approval from Parliament’s Finance Committee before authorising the withdrawal from the Contingency Fund.
Following the approval, Dr Ato Forson instructed the Controller and Accountant-General to release the funds. A dedicated National Disaster Management Committee account was subsequently opened at the Bank of Ghana, and the full GH¢350 million was transferred into the account.
According to the allocation, GH¢200 million will be used to provide urgent relief to flood victims and support affected communities, while the remaining GH¢150 million will finance flood mitigation projects aimed at reducing the recurrence and impact of flooding across the country.
The disbursement forms part of the government’s emergency response to the flood disaster, ensuring immediate assistance reaches affected communities while also investing in measures to strengthen the country’s resilience against future flooding.
