Former Minister for Finance and Member of Parliament for Karaga, Dr. Mohammed Amin Adam, has publicly endorsed former New Patriotic Party (NPP) National Chairman, Paul Awentami Afoko, for a return to the party’s top organisational position, describing him as the most capable person to lead the party’s rebuilding efforts ahead of the 2028 general elections.

The endorsement is being viewed as a significant boost to Afoko’s campaign, as he seeks to reclaim the National Chairmanship position on the back of his “3Rs Agenda”—Reunite, Rebuild and Recapture Power—following the NPP’s defeat in the 2024 general elections.

Dr. Amin Adam made his position known during a courtesy visit by Afoko and a delegation of NPP leaders and party aspirants at his private residence.

Addressing the gathering, the former Finance Minister declared his unwavering support for the former National Chairman, insisting that the party’s leadership decisions should be based on competence, experience and the ability to return the NPP to government.

“I support Paul Afoko for National Chairman,” Dr. Amin Adam stated, attracting applause from those present.

According to him, the NPP’s current status as an opposition party requires experienced and capable leadership rather than decisions influenced by popularity or public sentiment.

“We know the serious people who can bring us back to power. We do not follow the masses to choose someone to support; we support those we believe have the potential to win and lead the party,” he said.

The former Finance Minister stressed that while his loyalty and commitment to the NPP’s 2024 presidential candidate, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, remain unquestionable, he believes Paul Afoko possesses the organisational skills and leadership qualities needed to reposition the party for victory in the next election cycle.

He explained that his endorsement was informed by years of working closely with Afoko and witnessing his leadership capabilities firsthand.

“I have worked with Paul Afoko, and I know he is competent. He can also help raise funds for the party because we need money as a party in opposition,” Dr. Amin Adam noted.

His endorsement adds to growing interest surrounding the race for the NPP National Chairmanship as the party begins internal reorganisation following its electoral defeat.

Afoko’s comeback campaign

Paul Afoko, who previously served as National Chairman of the NPP before his suspension in 2015 amid internal disagreements, has since launched an aggressive nationwide campaign aimed at returning to the office.

Since announcing his intention to contest, the former National Chairman has embarked on extensive tours across the country, engaging regional executives, constituency executives, patrons, elders and grassroots members with what he describes as a blueprint for rebuilding the party.

Central to his campaign is the “3Rs Agenda”—Reunite, Rebuild and Recapture Power—which seeks to heal divisions that emerged within the party following the 2024 elections.

Afoko argues that unity remains the NPP’s greatest asset and has consistently called on members to put aside personal grievances and factional interests in pursuit of the party’s collective objective of returning to power in 2028.

As part of his campaign message, he has pledged to strengthen the party’s grassroots structures by empowering polling station executives, electoral area coordinators, constituency executives and other rank-and-file members whom he believes form the backbone of the NPP.

He has also promised improved welfare packages, better logistical support and greater inclusion of grassroots members in decision-making processes if elected National Chairman.
