Ghana’s economic performance among Africa’s strongest – Mahama

President John Dramani Mahama has described Ghana’s economy as one of the strongest performers in Africa, crediting the turnaround to prudent economic management, national discipline and divine guidance.
He made the remarks on Tuesday, July 1, 2026, at the National Day of Prayer and Thanksgiving, where he joined Muslim leaders at the National Mosque as part of nationwide interfaith prayers for peace, unity and development.
President Mahama said Ghana’s economic recovery has gained recognition across the continent, even amid global uncertainties, including ongoing tensions in the Middle East.
“God has been good to us this past year. He has guided our steps and granted us the wisdom and courage required to turn this economy around,” he said.
He added that despite external shocks and global pressures, Ghana’s economy has shown resilience and stability.
“Today, Ghana’s economy is recognised as one of the best-performing in Africa. Even in the face of the conflict in the Middle East, our economy has demonstrated remarkable resilience, and Ghanaians have been spared the effects of the external shocks occasioned by that war,” he stated.
The President acknowledged that the policies behind the recovery required difficult and sometimes unpopular decisions, but insisted they were necessary to stabilise the economy.
“The decisions required to restore the economy were neither easy nor popular. They demanded sacrifice, discipline and patience,” he said.
He stressed that the progress achieved was the result of a combination of policy discipline, public resilience and spiritual support, noting that Ghana has “turned the corner.”
President Mahama highlighted several indicators as evidence of improvement, including declining inflation, a more stable cedi, reduced debt levels, improved international reserves and renewed investor confidence.
“Inflation has declined significantly. Our currency, the cedi, has regained stability. Our debt has reduced. Our international reserves have improved. Investor confidence has strengthened, and growth opportunities are steadily returning,” he noted.
The National Day of Prayer and Thanksgiving brought together religious leaders, government officials and citizens in a unified call for continued peace, stability and national development.
