Black Queens vice-captain Cynthia Konla calls for investment in Africa’s women goalkeepers

Black Queens vice-captain Cynthia Findiib Konlan has called for greater investment in the development of goalkeepers across Africa, saying the continent has the potential to produce more world-class talent if young players receive the right support.

Konlan made the remarks during the Confederation of African Football’s (CAF) Stars Spotlight webinar, an initiative aimed at giving players preparing for the Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) a platform to contribute to the growth of women’s football across the continent.

Addressing participants during the virtual event, the Ghana international praised the progress made in women’s goalkeeping in Africa but stressed that more needs to be done to nurture the next generation through specialised coaching and structured development programmes.

“Goalkeeping has evolved tremendously in African football, but we must continue to invest in developing young talents. With the right coaching and opportunities, Africa can produce even more world-class goalkeepers,” she said.

Konlan also used the opportunity to inspire young girls aspiring to play between the posts, encouraging them to remain focused on their ambitions despite the challenges.

“To every young girl who wants to be a goalkeeper, don’t be afraid to dream big. Stay committed, work hard every day and never give up on your passion. Your dedication will open doors for you,” she added.

CAF’s Stars Spotlight webinar forms part of its broader efforts to empower players beyond the pitch, providing a platform for leading African footballers to share their experiences and ideas while promoting the continued growth of the women’s game across the continent.
