‘I’m Lobbying to Become NPP Acting Chairman to Advise Them’ – Asiedu Nketia Jokes

National Chairman of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Johnson Asiedu Nketia, has jokingly said he is lobbying to become the acting National Chairman of the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP) so he can help guide the party’s internal affairs.

Mr. Asiedu Nketia made the humorous remark while explaining his earlier concerns about the NPP’s decision to adopt a top-down approach in organising its internal elections.

Speaking on JoyNews’ PM Express, the veteran politician said he would gladly offer advice to the NPP if given the opportunity.

“That is why I have been lobbying to become their acting national chairman. So that I can advise them,” he said.

The NDC chairman explained that his earlier warning was not intended as an attack on the NPP but rather an observation based on how internal party contests can create divisions when not properly managed.

According to him, selecting a presidential candidate before completing other internal elections can encourage factions, as supporters of defeated aspirants may feel sidelined after the contest.

He argued that a bottom-up electoral structure, which gives grassroots members greater influence, is more effective in promoting unity and strengthening political parties after leadership contests.

Mr. Asiedu Nketia’s comments come as the NPP prepares for its national executive elections amid uncertainty surrounding some key leadership positions.

The party’s national chairmanship race has attracted attention following developments involving prominent figures, including Ashanti Regional Chairman Bernard Antwi Boasiako (Chairman Wontumi), who has faced legal challenges, and former National Chairman Paul Afoko, who has expressed interest in returning to the party’s leadership structure.

Although delivered in a light-hearted manner, Mr. Asiedu Nketia maintained that political parties must build internal systems that encourage inclusiveness, reduce tensions and prevent divisions after major leadership contests.
