Asantehene tells new KNUST Vice-Chancellor to lead with humility and fairness

The Chancellor of the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST), Asantehene Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, has called on the institution’s newly inducted Vice-Chancellor, Professor Christian Agyare, to lead with humility, fairness and a willingness to consult.

Speaking at Professor Agyare’s investiture ceremony, the Asantehene said the Vice-Chancellor’s responsibility extended beyond managing the university’s immediate challenges. He urged him to turn those difficulties into opportunities capable of strengthening confidence among the university community and its wider stakeholders.

Otumfuo said effective leadership depended on recognising that no individual could successfully guide a major institution alone. He pointed to the large attendance at the ceremony as evidence of the goodwill, trust and expectations surrounding the new Vice-Chancellor’s appointment.

“Remember, no Vice Chancellor succeeds alone. The massive attendance at your investiture today is a clear demonstration of the goodwill, confidence and high expectations that the university community and its stakeholders have for your leadership. Never consider this office as a privilege above others, rather, regard it as a sacred trust placed in your hands for the benefit of generations you may never meet.

“Institutions become stronger when leadership develops others rather than seeks to overshadow them. And finally, never lose sight of the reason this university exists. Every policy, every decision, every investment and every reform must ultimately enhance teaching, learning, research, innovation, and service to society.”

The Asantehene’s message placed emphasis on institutional stewardship and the long-term responsibilities attached to the Vice-Chancellor’s office. He encouraged Professor Agyare to view his appointment not as a position of superiority, but as a duty carried out on behalf of future generations.

He also stressed the importance of building people and institutions rather than allowing leadership to become centred on one individual. In his address, the Asantehene said KNUST would be strengthened when its leadership helped others to develop and contribute, rather than attempting to dominate or overshadow them.

According to the guidance delivered at the investiture, the university’s central purpose should remain the foundation for every major decision. Otumfuo said policies, investments and reforms must be directed towards improving teaching and learning, while also advancing research, innovation and service to society.

The ceremony marked the formal induction of Professor Christian Agyare as Vice-Chancellor of KNUST. His leadership will now be judged against the expectations outlined by the Chancellor, including consultation, fairness, humility and a clear commitment to protecting the university’s institutional interests.
