Asiedu Nketia Rejects Claims Thank-You Tour Was a 2028 Campaign Strategy

National Chairman of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Johnson Asiedu Nketia, has dismissed suggestions that his recent nationwide thank-you tour was designed to position him for a possible presidential ambition ahead of the 2028 elections.

According to the veteran politician, the tour was focused on resolving concerns among party members, strengthening internal unity and ensuring grassroots supporters remain committed to helping the government deliver on its mandate.

Speaking on JoyNews’ PM Express, Mr. Asiedu Nketia described claims that the tour was a campaign exercise as a misunderstanding of the responsibilities of a party chairman.

“If I was campaigning, at the end of every campaign, what happens? Elections. Since I finished three months ago, have they brought the ballot paper for us to cast the votes? It is work that ought to be done. And I’ll continue doing it,” he said.

He explained that his role as national chairman is to manage the affairs of the party and help create a supportive environment for the government to succeed.

“My duty as party chairman, who is not directly running a ministry, is to make sure that I govern the party and rein party members in to support the government to perform,” he stated.

Mr. Asiedu Nketia disclosed that some party members had expressed frustration over issues including government appointments, recruitment opportunities and other expectations, with some reportedly threatening protests against the administration.

“So, if I sit there as national chairman, and I hear that party people are disgruntled about ABC appointments, recruitment slots and other things and people are even trying to organise demonstrations against our own government, I sit there to fold my arms. I will be a stupid chairman,” he said.

He said the decision to embark on the tour was aimed at addressing those grievances and preventing tensions from escalating within the party.

“I thought that I should go down there and quench the fires. And so far I’m happy that once I went round, all the quiet fires were quenched,” he added.

The NDC chairman also rejected claims that the tour was intended to boost his personal popularity ahead of the next general election, arguing that he made no statements about his own political future during the engagements.

“Did you hear me saying anything about myself? Everything I said was streamed live. Did you hear me making a sentence about myself and what I intended to do? No,” he said.

Mr. Asiedu Nketia maintained that he would continue engaging party members whenever necessary, regardless of criticism, because addressing internal concerns remains part of his responsibility as party chairman.

“Anywhere I feel there is a need to reach out to party members and then deliver the right messages, I’ll not be listening to those who are making that noise at all. I’ll do my work because if that work never gets done, I am the first to be blamed,” he stated.
