Barker-Vormawor Petitions Presidency Over Alleged Deportation Attempt Against Belgian-Guinean National
Lawyer Oliver Barker-Vormawor says he intends to petition the Presidency over what he describes as an attempt by Ghanaian authorities to deport his client, Aminata Bangoura, without following due legal procedures.
In a post on X (formerly Twitter) on Wednesday, August 5, the lawyer alleged that Ms Bangoura, a Belgian-Guinean national, was transferred from the Cantonments Police Station to the airport at about 7:00 a.m. for deportation to Guinea without a court order.
According to him, Ms Bangoura resisted the move and locked herself inside an airport restroom while requesting access to her legal representatives.
Mr Barker-Vormawor later claimed that his client was forcibly removed from the restroom and sustained injuries around her eye during the process.
“Client has been forcibly removed from the toilets. She has sustained injuries and bleeding near her eye socket. Two lawyers, including myself, are waiting at the airport demanding access to her. We are petitioning the Presidency,” he wrote.
The lawyer said efforts to meet officials of Interpol Ghana to discuss the matter were unsuccessful. He added that he had also contacted European authorities over what he described as an attempt to deport a European citizen without due process.
Mr Barker-Vormawor further claimed that Ms Bangoura had informed Ghanaian authorities that she feared for her safety if she was returned to Guinea and intended to apply for political asylum in Ghana.
He called on the authorities to respect Ghana’s legal obligations and ensure that any deportation process complies with constitutional protections and international human rights standards.
The development follows Ms Bangoura’s arrest in Ghana on Tuesday, August 4, after she arrived in Accra from Paris.
According to Mr Barker-Vormawor, the arrest was based on an Interpol Red Notice issued at the request of Guinean authorities.
