Bashir Hayford accuses GFA of disrespecting Ghanaian coaches
Veteran Ghanaian coach Bashir Hayford has criticised the Ghana Football Association (GFA), saying local coaches are not receiving the respect and recognition they deserve.
Hayford’s comments follow remarks by GFA Executive Council member Frederick Acheampong that the association was considering adding a Ghanaian coach to the Black Stars’ technical team.
Acheampong, however, said the GFA had yet to identify a local coach it considered competent enough to join the senior national team’s technical setup.
That position has drawn a strong response from Hayford, who questioned why the association had been unable to find a suitable Ghanaian coach despite the experience available in the country.
“I don’t know why the GFA could not identify any local coach who could join the technical team. There are a lot of competent local coaches who could join the technical team,” Hayford told Asempa FM.
“For the Executive Council to conclude that there is no competent local coach is disrespectful, and it is the reason local coaches are not being respected and not getting the needed recognition.”
Hayford, who has previously managed Asante Kotoko and Heart of Lions, added that Ghana has several coaches capable of contributing to the Black Stars’ technical setup.
“I believe there are a lot of local coaches who could join the Black Stars technical team,” he said.
His comments come at a time of uncertainty around the national team’s coaching structure.
Black Stars head coach Carlos Queiroz’s future remains unclear after the Portuguese veteran was appointed on a short-term contract in April, ahead of the 2026 Fifa World Cup.
Queiroz guided Ghana to the knockout stage of the tournament, but the Black Stars were eliminated in the Round of 32 following a 1-0 defeat by Colombia.
The GFA is now considering its options as it prepares for Ghana’s next competitive assignment.
The Black Stars are expected to begin their 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifying campaign in September.
Ghana have been drawn in Group C alongside Ivory Coast, The Gambia and Somalia.
The four-time African champions will be determined to qualify for the tournament after missing the 2025 AFCON in Morocco.
With the coaching situation still being resolved, the debate over the role of Ghanaian coaches is likely to remain a key talking point as the Black Stars prepare for their next campaign.
