Brandon Thomas-Asante’s rise is same as Antoine Semenyo – Ian Wright

Former England striker Ian Wright has hailed the inspiring rise of Ghana international Brandon Thomas-Asante, comparing his remarkable journey to that of fellow Black Stars forward Antoine Semenyo as both players overcame the odds to reach football’s biggest stage.
Speaking about Thomas-Asante’s progression from England’s lower leagues to representing Ghana at the FIFA World Cup, Wright praised the striker’s determination and resilience, describing his career as proof that persistence can eventually pay off.
“What I love about it is it’s the same as Semenyo. Semenyo was doing all of it. He was going through it,” Wright said.
“And how quickly it can happen. He’s done that journey. He’s come up now with Coventry, he’s playing in the World Cup. He’s come back to play in the Premier League. And bam.”
Thomas-Asante’s career has been defined by patience and hard work. After leaving Milton Keynes Dons, he rebuilt his career through a successful trial at Salford City before earning moves to West Bromwich Albion and later Coventry City, where his performances have continued to attract attention.
Wright believes Thomas-Asante’s story reflects the unpredictable nature of football, where perseverance can open unexpected doors.
Semenyo’s path has followed a similarly unconventional route. The Ghana forward developed through Bristol City’s academy before gaining valuable experience during a loan spell at Newport County. He later established himself in the Championship and earned a move to the Premier League, where he has become one of Ghana’s standout performers.
For Wright, the journeys of both players serve as a reminder that success often comes to those willing to remain patient through setbacks.
“You have to hang in there,” he added.
Thomas-Asante and Semenyo both featured in Ghana’s opening World Cup victory over Panama and are expected to play key roles again when the Black Stars face England in their next Group G fixture in Boston on Tuesday, June 23.
