CAF approves Medeama TnA sports stadium for Champions League games

Ghana Premier League champions Medeama SC will host CAF Champions League matches in Tarkwa for the first time after the Confederation of African Football (CAF) approved the Tarkwa and Aboso (TnA) Stadium to stage preliminary round fixtures.

CAF has granted the venue Category 2 Stadium Approval following a technical inspection, clearing it to host Preliminary Round matches in the TotalEnergies CAF Champions League as well as CAF Youth and Women’s National Team qualifiers.

The decision marks a historic milestone for both Medeama and Ghanaian football, ending years of uncertainty over the club’s home venue for continental competition.

Previously, Ghanaian clubs have often been forced to play CAF matches away from their traditional home grounds because of stadium infrastructure requirements. Medeama will now have the opportunity to play in front of their home supporters in Tarkwa, subject to CAF’s final confirmation of each fixture in line with competition regulations.

The approval follows months of work involving Medeama SC, the Ghana Football Association, stadium management and other stakeholders to ensure the facility met CAF’s infrastructure standards.

Club officials believe the development will provide a major boost as the Mauve and Yellow prepare for the 2026/27 CAF Champions League campaign, with the backing of their supporters expected to play a key role.

Beyond Medeama’s ambitions, the certification is another significant step in Ghana’s efforts to improve football infrastructure and strengthen its ability to host continental competitions.

For football fans in Tarkwa, the approval signals the arrival of elite African club football in the mining town for the first time, with the TnA Stadium set to become the latest Ghanaian venue to welcome CAF Champions League action.
