Cape Coast, Elmina Castles Extend Hours to 10pm Under 24-Hour Economy Plan
Ghana’s historic Cape Coast and Elmina Castles will now remain open until 10:00 p.m., as part of efforts to align the country’s tourism sector with the government’s 24-hour economy agenda.
Tourism, Culture and Creative Arts Minister Abla Dzifa Gomashie announced the extended operating hours during the Government Accountability Series on Monday, August 10, 2026.
She disclosed that the Ghana Museums and Monuments Board (GMMB) had successfully tested night tours at both heritage sites before introducing the extended opening hours.
According to the Minister, the initiative will give tourists and other visitors the opportunity to explore the historic castles beyond the conventional daytime schedule.
“The Board and management of GMMB have successfully piloted night tours in Cape Coast and Elmina Castles,” she said.
Madam Gomashie explained that the move forms part of government’s wider strategy to implement the 24-hour economy while unlocking new opportunities across the tourism and creative industries.
The extended hours are also expected to make Ghana’s heritage attractions more accessible, encourage evening tourism and create additional opportunities for businesses and service providers operating around the historic sites.
The initiative marks a shift towards offering visitors more flexible ways to experience Ghana’s cultural heritage while supporting the government’s broader efforts to expand economic activity beyond traditional working hours.
