Chelsea sign veteran striker Danny Welbeck from Brighton
Chelsea have completed the signing of experienced England forward Danny Welbeck from Brighton, with the 35-year-old agreeing a deal that will keep him at Stamford Bridge until 30 June 2028.
The Premier League club confirmed the transfer on Saturday, bringing an end to Welbeck’s six-year spell at Brighton, where he established himself as one of the division’s most reliable and experienced forwards.
Welbeck joined Brighton on a free transfer from Watford in October 2020 and became a key figure for the Seagulls, combining leadership with consistent performances in attack.
The Manchester-born striker arrives at Chelsea after making 400 Premier League appearances, scoring 90 goals and providing 38 assists across spells with Manchester United, Sunderland, Arsenal, Watford and Brighton.
A product of Manchester United’s academy, Welbeck won two Premier League titles, two League Cups, three Community Shields, the UEFA Champions League in 2008 and the FIFA Club World Cup in 2009 before leaving Old Trafford.
He completed a £20 million move to Arsenal in 2014, where he lifted the FA Cup twice and played a key role in the club’s run to the 2019 Europa League final.
Welbeck also boasts significant European experience, having scored seven goals in 24 Champions League appearances and six goals in 21 Europa League matches during his career.
His record extends to domestic cup competitions, with 18 goals across the FA Cup and EFL Cup, underlining his ability to deliver in major competitions.
Chelsea believe Welbeck’s experience, leadership and proven Premier League pedigree will strengthen their attacking options as they prepare for the new season.
The move marks another milestone in a career spanning nearly two decades at the highest level of English football, with the former England international now set to begin a new chapter in west London after signing a contract until the summer of 2028.
