Dozens of residents and business owners are reeling from the aftermath of a devastating fire that tore through more than 100 wooden structures at the Tema Heavy Industrial Area late Wednesday night, June 18, 2025.

The blaze, which reportedly began around 11:00 p.m., is believed to have started in a kiosk where cooking activities were underway.

Eyewitnesses say the flames spread rapidly to nearby structures, engulfing homes and businesses before the fire service could arrive.

Though no injuries or fatalities have been reported, the material losses are extensive. Entire clusters of wooden buildings were reduced to ash, leaving many with nothing to salvage.

Some victims expressed anger and frustration over what they described as a delayed response by the Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS), claiming that quicker intervention could have limited the damage.

“I was asleep with my daughter that night while my elder brother was at church. Later, he called me to come outside because there was a fire. When I heard the sound of the flames, I rushed out almost naked.”

“As we speak, I’ve lost everything. We hear the person who caused the fire has fled. He should keep running and make sure we never set eyes on him again. In the meantime, we are appealing to the government to come to our aid,” one resident said.

Authorities have yet to release an official statement regarding the cause of the fire or the full extent of the destruction.

Meanwhile, affected residents are appealing for emergency assistance as they begin to recover from the incident.
