“Focus on lesser known sports”- Taekwondo expert tells incoming Sports Minister
Technical director for taekwondo in Ashanti region J.K Simon has called on incoming Youth and Sports minister Isaac Asiamah to keep his lenses on lesser known sporting disciplines in the country.
According to the martial artiste, most stakeholders in Ghana’s sports industry focus on football notably the senior national team Black Stars while accusing the football team of not delivering as far as trophies and glory is concerned.
“We are pleading with the government, philanthropists, stakeholders and corporate entities to give us a helping hand because the Black Stars is not the only sporting group in the country. For over 30 years they have not been able to win a single trophy even after taking huge sums of money but only one person has been able to bring Ghana a gold medal in ice skating” he lamented
Explaining the success in ice skating, he revealed that the team went to Korea without a penny from government but still won a gold medal for the country.

Still soliciting for support, Mr Simon said training equipments for taekwondo are very expensive hence the urgent need for financial assistance.
He challenged the minister designate not to tow the line of his predecessors who never attended to other sporting disciplines even after assuring them of not neglecting what he terms as “under-developed sporting disciplines”
“Every minister that comes assures us of helping other disciplines but end up not living by their words. We are pleading with the new minister and know that he is well informed about sports and will hopefully pass the vetting, he should please look at other disciplines because we are suffering”
“If one-third of the money spent on football is channelled towards other disciplines, we will surely win many medals” he concluded
