Ghana Mourns Academic Giant Professor Jerome Siau Djangmah at 88

Professor Jerome Siau Djangmah, one of Ghana’s most distinguished academics and educational administrators, has passed away at the age of 88, leaving behind a legacy of remarkable service to education in Ghana and across West Africa.

The family announced his peaceful passing on Saturday, May 23, 2026, in a statement signed by Dr. Addo Djangmah on behalf of the bereaved family.

Over a career spanning several decades, Prof. Djangmah occupied some of the most influential positions in Ghana’s educational landscape. He served as Director-General of the Ghana Education Service, Chairman of the West African Examinations Council, and Chairman of the Governing Council of the University of Education, Winneba.

He also served as Pro Vice-Chancellor of the University of Cape Coast and headed the Department of Zoology at both the University of Ghana and the University of Cape Coast — a breadth of service that underscored his stature as a pillar of the country’s academic and institutional development.

His contributions helped shape the direction of education policy and governance across the sub-region during a period of significant growth and transformation in Ghana’s educational system.

The Djangmah family has announced that visitations will be held at the family residence at No. 5 Oleander Street, Teshie-Nungua Estate in Accra, between 1:00 p.m. and 4:00 p.m. on the following dates: Saturday, May 30 and Sunday, May 31; Wednesday, June 3; Saturday, June 6 and Sunday, June 7; Wednesday, June 10; and Saturday, June 13.

Details of the final funeral arrangements are to be communicated in due course.
