Ghana head coach Carlos Queiroz believes the Black Stars will continue to improve as they settle into a new tactical system after opening their 2026 FIFA World Cup campaign with a hard-fought victory over Panama.

A dramatic late goal from Caleb Yirenkyi earned Ghana a 1-0 win in their Group L opener, giving the four-time African champions a crucial three points in their bid to reach the knockout stage for the first time since the 2010 World Cup.

The match appeared destined for a goalless draw before Yirenkyi latched onto a pinpoint cross from Brandon Thomas-Asante in the closing minutes to fire home the winner.

Speaking after the match, Queiroz praised his players’ commitment and insisted the team’s performances will improve as they become more familiar with his tactical approach.

“We are growing as a team,” Queiroz said.

“We are playing a different system, and our attacking methods are built around the profile of our players.

“We want vertical football and full-speed action. Step by step, the players will improve and adjust to each other.”

The victory leaves Ghana second in Group L behind England, who began their campaign with an impressive 4-2 win over Croatia.

The Black Stars now face a stern test against England at Gillette Stadium on 23 June before wrapping up their group-stage fixtures against Croatia four days later.

With momentum on their side after a winning start, Ghana will be aiming to build on their encouraging performance and strengthen their chances of progressing to the last 16.
