Ghana, US authorities pursue more suspects in power plant bribery case — Srem-Sai

Deputy Attorney General Justice Srem-Sai has disclosed that Ghanaian and United States authorities are collaborating to identify and prosecute other individuals allegedly connected to a bribery scheme involving a power plant project awarded to a Turkish energy company by the Government of Ghana.

His disclosure comes after the conviction of Ghanaian businessman and former Tema Oil Refinery (TOR) Managing Director, Asante Kwaku Berko, by a federal jury in Brooklyn, New York.

In a post on social media, Justice Srem-Sai said the Attorney-General’s Office was working closely with its US counterparts to ensure that anyone found to have played a role in the alleged corruption is held accountable.

He explained that the joint efforts were focused on individuals allegedly implicated in the bribery scheme surrounding the development of the power plant under a contract executed between 2014 and 2017.

“The Honourable Attorney-General is working with his United States counterparts to bring to book persons who are implicated in the bribery scheme related to the 2014–2017 power plant development contract between a Turkish energy company and the Government,” he stated.

According to the Deputy Attorney General, the latest move follows Berko’s conviction in the United States over his alleged involvement in the scheme.

He said Berko was found guilty by a US federal jury in Brooklyn on charges including conspiracy to violate the United States Foreign Corrupt Practices Act, alongside other related offences.

“This follows ASANTE KWAKU BERKO’s conviction by a United States federal jury in Brooklyn, New York, on charges of conspiracy to violate the United States’ Foreign Corrupt Practices Act and other related laws,” Justice Srem-Sai added.

Berko’s conviction has renewed scrutiny of the power plant agreement entered into between 2014 and 2017 and allegations of bribery surrounding the transaction.

However, Justice Srem-Sai did not identify the other individuals currently being investigated or disclose specific details about the measures being pursued by the two countries.

The latest development highlights the continued cooperation between Ghanaian and US authorities in investigating alleged corruption connected to the power project and pursuing individuals suspected of involvement in the scheme.
