Ghana Water Limited identifies over 375 illegal connections in Accra

The Managing Director of Ghana Water Limited, Adam Mutawakilu, has revealed that the company has made significant progress in its ongoing crackdown on illegal water connections in Accra.
Speaking after an inspection tour on May 11, 2026, he disclosed that more than 375 customers have been identified for engaging in illegal water connections since August 2025.
“We have identified over 375 customers who have done illegal connections only in Accra from August to date. As at last Friday, it was 397, but the numbers keep increasing every day,” he stated.
Mr Mutawakilu warned that individuals found culpable would face strict sanctions, including legal action and disconnection from the water supply system.
“One is for them to come and pay the outstanding amount. If you are not willing to pay, then the court process starts. They will be disconnected from benefiting from water until all liabilities are settled,” he said.
He further disclosed that the exercise has uncovered significant financial losses to the company.
According to him, GWL has so far accrued about GH¢16 million through the exercise and recovered approximately GH¢3.7 million.
The operation forms part of measures by Ghana Water Limited to curb illegal water connections, reduce revenue losses and improve service delivery.
