Government moves to boost Grain Market access ahead of major farming season

Deputy Minister for Food and Agriculture, John Dumelo, has assured Parliament that government is implementing measures to support maize and bean farmers in the Atebubu-Amantin District following last year’s marketing challenges that left many producers unable to sell their harvests.

He said the Ministry has begun nationwide distribution of agricultural inputs ahead of the 2026 major cropping season to boost production and improve yields across farming communities.

Responding to questions on the floor of Parliament, Mr Dumelo added that the Ministry is also collaborating with the National Food Buffer Stock Company (NAFCO) to improve grain marketing and ensure farmers have a reliable market for their produce.

He explained that NAFCO has been directed to intensify the purchase of surplus maize, rice and soya beans from farmers to ease marketing difficulties and stabilise supply.

“The Ministry is working closely with the National Food Buffer Stock Company to strengthen the purchase and marketing of locally produced grain and has directed the National Food Buffer Stock Company (NAFCO) to intensify the purchase of surplus maize, rice and soya beans from farmers to help address the marketing difficulties and provide a ready market for their produce,” he stated.

Mr Dumelo said the interventions are expected to stabilise grain prices, improve farmers’ incomes and strengthen national food security.

The measures form part of broader efforts to strengthen domestic grain value chains, reduce post-harvest losses and improve market access for farmers, especially during bumper harvest periods when oversupply often leads to falling farmgate prices.
