GTEC flags dozens of unapproved universities and colleges, warns students to verify accreditation

The Ghana Tertiary Education Commission (GTEC) has issued a public alert cautioning students, parents, and employers against engaging with a number of higher education institutions that are not officially recognised in Ghana.
In a statement released on May 28, the Commission explained that the affected institutions have either failed to obtain the required accreditation or do not currently satisfy the regulatory standards necessary to operate as approved tertiary institutions within the country.
GTEC stressed that enrolling in programmes offered by such institutions carries significant risks, as qualifications obtained from unaccredited providers may not be accepted for employment, professional licensing, promotions, or further academic studies.
The Commission encouraged prospective students to conduct thorough checks before applying to any university, college, seminary, or professional training institution. Employers were also advised to verify academic credentials presented by job applicants to ensure they originate from recognised institutions.
According to GTEC, the publication of the list forms part of ongoing efforts to maintain academic integrity and protect the credibility of Ghana’s higher education sector.
The institutions identified span several countries, including Ghana, Nigeria, Liberia, the United States, the United Kingdom, India, Switzerland, Mexico, and Guyana. Among the foreign institutions cited were Universidad Azteca, Atlantic International University, Swiss Management Centre University, and Texila American University.
Several local institutions were also named, including Debest College of Science, Arts and Business, Faith University Seminary, and Kingdom Living Bible Institute.
GTEC reiterated that accreditation remains a critical requirement for all tertiary institutions and urged the public to rely on official verification channels before making educational or employment-related decisions.
