GWL disconnects standard water, others over illegal connections in Kasoa

Ghana Water Limited (GWL) has disconnected Standard Water Company and several other commercial water operators in Kasoa after a joint enforcement operation uncovered extensive illegal water connections in the Awutu Senya East Municipality.
The exercise, carried out with support from National Security operatives, exposed a 10-bedroom property equipped with an underground reservoir allegedly used to store illegally sourced water.
Investigators also found that Standard Water and another sachet water producer were drawing water through bypassed lines, completely avoiding payment. Officials revealed that many of the companies applied for domestic meters but later diverted the system using two-inch pipes to extract large volumes of water for commercial use without directing it through the meters.
According to GWL, the illegal connections represent a major drain on the utility’s resources and contribute significantly to persistent supply challenges in the area.
Speaking to the media, Accra West Regional Communications Manager Solace Akomeah expressed concern over the scale of the theft, noting that offenders will face surcharges and possible prosecution. She described the situation in Kasoa as unacceptable and warned that such practices undermine efforts to ensure equitable water distribution to households and lawful businesses.
GWL is urging residents to report suspected illegal connections, stressing that public cooperation is essential for stable and fair access to water.
The ongoing enforcement operation is part of a broader strategy aimed at addressing supply issues and protecting the integrity of the water distribution network.
Ms. Akomeah encouraged community members to promptly alert the utility or security agencies whenever they suspect water theft or meter bypassing in their neighbourhoods.
