Kennedy Agyapong’s claim that NPP did nothing to advance Afari hospital fact-checked as false

Claims by former NPP flagbearer aspirant, Kennedy Agyapong, that the erstwhile NPP government did nothing to advance the completion of Afari Hospital in Kumasi has been branded false.
Following accusation by the NPP Minority in Parliament against the NDC hovernment that it has abandoned the opening of the Afari hospital, following its near-completion status, the former NPP flagbearer aspirant, jumped to the defence of the NDC government, claiming that the NPP, during its eight years in office, “didn’t do anything” to complete the hospital.
“This hospital was started by President John Agyekum Kufuor. NDC came to start it, and when we came, I am NPP, and I am telling you the gospel truth. I was the chairman for Defence and Interior, and we didn’t do anything. We were there for eight years, and we didn’t do it. When somebody comes for 15 months, then you have a problem,” Kennedy Agyapong told the media on Tuesday June 16, 2026.
His emphatic claim has however, been subjected to a fact-check by Joy Online, and has been found to be false.
According to status report by consultants obtained by the report, Kennedy’s claim of the NPP doing nothing in 8 years, contradict evidence, which show that the Akufo-Addo government moved the project from the 40% it inherited to about 97% complete by November 2024.
On funding, the report also said the erstwhile NPP government made extra financial commitment of $21.5m to the initial contract sum of $180m in 2008, which was backed by a loan.
Out of the total 21.8m financial commitment made by the Akufo-Addo government, $19.3m was paid to the contractor in 2018, following demands for contract variations, after delays between 2009-2017.
And in 2023, the erstwhile NPP government paid a further $2.5m of a $3m final tranche to the contractor, leaving an outstanding of $500,000 to complete the work.
