Learn from Croatia defeat – Abdul Majeed Waris to Black Stars ahead of Colombia clash

Former Ghana international Abdul Majeed Waris has urged the Black Stars to take valuable lessons from their defeat to Croatia as they prepare for a crucial Round of 32 clash against Colombia at the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
Despite ending the group stage with a loss, Ghana secured qualification for the knockout rounds after finishing third in Group L, keeping alive hopes of a deep run in the tournament.
The Black Stars opened their campaign with a hard-fought victory over Panama before earning a commendable draw against England. However, they suffered a setback in their final group match against Croatia, exposing areas Waris believes must be addressed before the next stage.
Speaking to TV3, the former striker praised the team’s achievement in reaching the knockout phase but stressed that improving on the mistakes made against Croatia will be vital against a strong Colombian side.
“It’s been really good, especially Ghana going through the group stage, something everyone was hoping for Ghana, and they’ve done it. I think that is the most important thing,” Waris said.
“The only thing is that we just have to learn from our mistakes from the Croatia game. We changed a bit against Croatia and just have to learn from it, and then we can progress.”
Ghana will now turn their attention to Saturday’s Round of 32 encounter with Colombia, knowing victory would secure a place in the last 16 and keep their World Cup dream alive.
The Black Stars will be aiming to build on the positives from their group-stage campaign while delivering an improved performance against one of South America’s strongest teams.
