Mohammed Salah inspires Egypt to historic first-ever World Cup victory

Egypt celebrated a landmark moment in their football history after coming from behind to defeat New Zealand 3-1 on Monday, securing the country’s first-ever FIFA World Cup victory.
Inspired by captain Mohamed Salah, the Pharaohs recovered from an early setback at BC Place to claim all three points in their second Group G match and move to the top of the standings ahead of a decisive final group clash against Iran.
New Zealand made the brighter start and nearly opened the scoring inside two minutes when Sarpreet Singh’s effort drifted narrowly wide of the post. The Oceania side continued to threaten, with Elijah Just forcing an impressive save from goalkeeper Oufa Shobeir before finally breaking the deadlock in the 15th minute.
Tim Payne’s inviting cross found Finn Surman, who powered a header into the roof of the net to hand New Zealand a deserved 1-0 lead.
Egypt gradually settled into the contest, with Omar Marmoush testing goalkeeper Max Crocombe before Salah came close from a free-kick as the Africans searched for an equaliser before the break.
The Liverpool forward almost levelled immediately after the restart but was denied by Crocombe from close range.
Egypt’s persistence finally paid off in the 59th minute. Mohamed Hany surged down the right flank before delivering a pinpoint cross that was met by Mostafa Ziko, whose powerful header restored parity.
With momentum firmly on their side, Egypt completed the turnaround nine minutes later. Ziko turned provider, slipping a clever pass into Salah’s path, and the Egyptian captain made no mistake, calmly slotting the ball into the bottom corner to put his side ahead.
Salah then capped a memorable performance with an assist in the 82nd minute. His perfectly delivered corner was met by Trezeguet, whose emphatic header bounced into the net to seal a famous 3-1 victory.
The result marks a historic milestone for Egypt, who became the first African and Arab nation to compete at a FIFA World Cup in 1934. Following appearances in 1990 and 2018, the victory over New Zealand represents the Pharaohs’ first win on football’s biggest stage.
The triumph also lifts Egypt to the summit of Group G and leaves them well placed to challenge for a place in the knockout rounds when they face Iran in their final group-stage fixture.
