A military officer with the National Anti-Illegal Mining Operations Secretariat (NAIMOS) has died following a vehicle accident involving the team.

Four other officers, reported to be in critical condition, were first treated at Obuasi Government Hospital before being transferred to Anglogold Obuasi Hospital for advanced care.

The crash occurred late Wednesday as the team was returning from an operation at a mining concession in Anyankyerim, which has been occupied by illegal miners. Eyewitnesses reported that the vehicle overturned between the Anyankyerim community and Airport Road.

The affected concession, owned by Mining and Construction Services Limited, has been the focus of disputes after illegal miners claimed it had been allocated to them by the NDC government. Investigations suggest the miners may have backing from influential figures, including Alhaji Zamba, NDC Vice Chairman for the Obuasi West Constituency, who publicly asserted ownership of the site in a social media video.
