Nana B mourns Akwatia MP: “We’ve lost a rising star”

National Organiser of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Henry Nana Boakye, popularly known as Nana B, has expressed profound sorrow over the passing of Akwatia MP Ernest Yaw Kumi, calling it a devastating loss to both the party and Parliament.
In an interview on Asempa FM’s Ekosii Sen, Nana B said the news was difficult to process.
“Sometimes, it’s even hard to believe what the Bible says — that we should give thanks to God for everything,” he said. “How do you thank God for something like this? It’s painful. But the Bible says we must give thanks, so we do, even when it’s hard,” he said.
He revealed that he first learned of the MP’s death during a National Executive Committee meeting at the party’s headquarters on Monday morning.
“We were discussing matters about Ablekuma North when our Director of Administration and Finance showed me the news on the internet. I was shocked and heartbroken,” he said.
According to Nana B, the atmosphere in the meeting changed immediately.
“I later saw the Regional Chairman returning to the meeting in tears. We had to pause everything. Executives like our General Secretary, Minority Leader, and other senior members were all visibly crying. That tells you how deeply this has affected the party,” he added.
He described Ernest Kumi as one of the NPP’s brightest young stars, commending his intellect, dedication, and resilience.
“He was a very brilliant and intelligent young man — deep in his submissions and hardworking. He had just overcome a legal battle regarding his seat and was ready to make his mark in Parliament. Unfortunately, that opportunity has been taken from him,” he lamented.
Nana B noted that Kumi’s death is not only a blow to the NPP but also to the nation’s legislature.
“This is a big blow to the NPP and Parliament. We’ve lost a rising star,” he said.
While the cause of death has not been officially confirmed, reports suggest that the MP died after a brief illness. Tributes have been pouring in from across the political divide as the nation mourns his passing.
