The National Democratic Congress has kicked off a month-long observance dubbed “NDC Month,” marking the anniversary of the June 4 Uprising with a renewed call on members to recommit to the founding ideals of the party.

The observance, which runs from May 15 to June 22, was launched at a press conference in Accra and will feature lectures, commemorative ceremonies, and educational activities across the country, with the Bono Region serving as the focal point for this year’s main June 4 commemoration.

Addressing the press conference, NDC General Secretary Fiifi Fiavi Kwetey said the annual observance was designed to provide space for reflection and recommitment to the values of patriotism, sacrifice, accountability, and social justice that have defined the party’s political tradition.

He noted that May 15 holds particular significance as the date of the failed 1979 uprising led by then Flight Lieutenant Jerry John Rawlings, which preceded the June 4 Uprising.

This year’s theme — “Strengthening State Institutions: Lessons from the June 4, 1979 Uprising” — centres on the responsibility of public officials and state institutions to place national interest above personal gain.

Kwetey used the occasion to caution members against treating the party as a platform for self-enrichment, urging the youth especially to understand its ideological roots.

“When this vehicle has all along been a vehicle for the empowerment of the people,” he said.

A series of activities has been mapped out across the commemoration period. A public lecture is scheduled for June 3 in the Banda Constituency of the Bono Region.

June 4 itself will be marked with a flag-raising ceremony, wreath-laying, and the lighting of a perpetual flame. June 10, the party’s founding anniversary, will be observed as NDC Day, with a focus on ideology and youth engagement, while June 19 will feature a cadres’ programme on transparent governance and grassroots mobilisation.

The observance will conclude on June 22 with Founder’s Day activities held in collaboration with the Jerry John Rawlings Foundation.

Highlights of the day will include the unveiling of a bust of the late former President and the renaming of the party’s national headquarters in Accra as “Rawlings House.”
