NHIA Suspends Three Pharmacies Over Fraudulent Claims on National Health Insurance Scheme

The National Health Insurance Authority has moved against three pharmacies, placing them on immediate suspension from the National Health Insurance Scheme following the discovery of significant irregularities in their claims transactions.
The affected facilities — Deldem Pharma Limited at Iron City in Weija, Paramedica Pharmacy on Guggisberg Avenue in Ablekuma, and Desh Chemist on Amasaman-Odumase High Street — have been barred from dispensing medicines or rendering any services under the NHIS with effect from May 14, 2026.
The action follows a routine claims verification exercise conducted by the Authority, which uncovered what it described as material irregularities raising reasonable suspicion of fraud and abuse in breach of the NHIS Provider Service Agreement.
NHIS subscribers who rely on the three facilities for pharmaceutical services have been advised to visit any other accredited provider across the country while the suspension remains in force.
NHIA Chief Executive Dr. Victor Asare Bampoe issued a firm warning to providers tempted to exploit the Scheme, stressing that the Authority would not turn a blind eye to conduct that threatens the long-term sustainability of the NHIS.
He noted that individuals found culpable upon conviction face fines, imprisonment of up to ten years, or both under the relevant provisions of the law.
The Authority indicated that the suspension is part of its broader commitment to protecting the integrity of the Scheme and ensuring that resources meant to benefit subscribers are not misappropriated.
