President John Dramani Mahama has announced plans to redevelop the Ho Stadium into a modern multi-purpose sports and entertainment complex, as part of efforts to increase the number of Confederation of African Football (CAF)-approved stadiums across Ghana.

Speaking during an inspection of the facility in the Volta Region, Mr Mahama said the project forms part of the government’s long-term strategy to ensure Ghana has at least five stadiums capable of hosting CAF competitions.

He said the redevelopment would also address the long-standing challenge of stadiums remaining largely idle outside football matches.

“The problem we have with most stadia is that when we are not playing soccer, we are not doing anything else with the stadium,” the President said.

Mr Mahama disclosed that funding for the project would be made available soon, after which the final design would be completed ahead of a sod-cutting ceremony to officially begin construction.

The upgraded Ho Stadium is expected to feature a modern natural grass pitch equipped with a computerised irrigation system designed to improve the quality of the playing surface while reducing maintenance costs. The system will also help ensure the facility remains in use throughout the year.

Beyond football, the redevelopment will introduce commercial and entertainment facilities capable of hosting concerts, conferences and other public events, creating new revenue opportunities and transforming the stadium into a year-round destination.

The President described the Ho Stadium project as one of the flagship initiatives under the government’s broader infrastructure agenda aimed at improving sports facilities nationwide.

Ghana hosted the Africa Cup of Nations in 2008 but currently has only a limited number of stadiums that satisfy CAF’s infrastructure standards. Mr Mahama said the government’s vision is to develop world-class sporting venues across several regions, reducing the concentration of international football matches in Accra and Kumasi while expanding opportunities for sports and entertainment nationwide.
