French football legend Patrick Vieira has been appointed head coach of Senegal, taking on the challenge of leading the Teranga Lions into a new era.

Vieira is expected to sign a four-year contract with the Senegalese Football Federation (FSF), bringing a wealth of experience from both his playing and coaching careers.

The former Arsenal captain will have ambitious targets during his time with the national team. Senegal want to reach the final of the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations, while qualification for the 2030 Fifa World Cup is also a key objective.

Vieira, 50, enjoyed a distinguished playing career, winning the Premier League three times with Arsenal and lifting the 1998 World Cup and Euro 2000 with France.

He later moved into management, taking charge of clubs including New York City FC, Nice, Crystal Palace and Strasbourg.

His appointment represents a major step for Senegal, who have established themselves as one of Africa’s leading football nations in recent years.

Vieira now faces the task of turning that potential into further international success, with the 2027 AFCON providing his first major tournament target.

The Senegal job also offers Vieira the opportunity to build a strong foundation ahead of the 2030 World Cup, with qualification firmly among the federation’s priorities.

With a four-year deal expected, both Vieira and Senegal appear to be looking beyond short-term results and towards building a team capable of competing at the highest level in Africa and on the world stage
