Sports Minister reveals Carlos Queiroz’s true salary, dismisses $100,000 claims

Minister for Sports and Recreation Kofi Adams has disclosed that Black Stars head coach Carlos Queiroz earns a monthly salary of $80,000, rejecting reports that the Portuguese coach takes home $100,000.
The minister made the clarification during an interview with TV3, ending months of speculation surrounding the financial terms of Queiroz’s contract with the Ghana Football Association (GFA).
“Carlos Queiroz earns $80,000 a month, not the $100,000 that had been speculated,” Mr Adams said.
Queiroz, 73, was appointed Ghana’s head coach ahead of the 2026 FIFA World Cup following the dismissal of Otto Addo in March. While the experienced Portuguese manager signed a short-term deal with the GFA, the details of his remuneration were not disclosed, leading to widespread speculation.
The former Iran, Egypt and Colombia coach oversaw an encouraging World Cup campaign, guiding the Black Stars to the knockout stage for the first time since the 2010 tournament in South Africa.
Ghana opened their campaign with a hard-fought 1-0 win over Panama before holding England to a goalless draw. Despite suffering a 2-1 defeat to Croatia in their final Group C match, the Black Stars progressed to the Round of 32 after finishing third in the group.
Their World Cup journey ended with a narrow 1-0 defeat to Colombia in the knockout stage.
Despite the elimination, Queiroz’s performance is understood to have earned the confidence of both the Ghana Football Association and the Ministry of Sports. Reports indicate that discussions are underway over a two-year contract extension that would keep the veteran coach in charge of the national team.
Attention now turns to the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers. Ghana have been drawn in Group C alongside Côte d’Ivoire, Somalia and The Gambia, with the qualifying campaign set to begin in September.
