1,300 security service applicants tested HIV positive during recruitment screening — Interior Minister

Muntaka Mohammed-Mubarak has revealed that approximately 1,300 applicants who participated in Ghana’s recent security services recruitment exercise tested positive for HIV during mandatory medical screening.
Speaking on the outcome of the recruitment process, the Interior Minister said the figure emerged from about 100,000 applicants who underwent screening as part of the selection process.
He encouraged applicants who were disqualified on medical grounds not to lose hope but instead seek a better understanding of their health status and pursue appropriate medical care where available.
According to the Minister, candidates who did not meet the required medical standards should consult healthcare professionals to receive counselling, confirm their diagnoses, and undergo the necessary treatment or management for conditions that may be addressable before future recruitment exercises.
He stressed that applicants who failed the health assessment should take advantage of available medical support to improve their overall well-being and, where possible, enhance their eligibility for future opportunities in the security services.
The Minister’s remarks underscore the importance of the medical screening component of security recruitment, which is designed to ensure that successful candidates meet the health standards required for service while also encouraging unsuccessful applicants to seek appropriate healthcare and remain informed about their medical conditions.
