2028 win possible if NPP stays united— Bawumia
Former Vice President and 2024 flagbearer of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, has expressed strong optimism that the party can return to power in 2028 but only if it rebuilds internal unity and operates with discipline and focus.
Addressing party supporters at the NPP’s 33rd Anniversary celebration in New York on Sunday, August 24, Dr. Bawumia emphasised that victory in 2028 is attainable if the party puts its house in order and positions itself as the most credible alternative.
“I have absolute confidence that if we work hard and stay united, we will win 2028. But we need to put our house in order and position the party as the best credible alternative,” he said.
He called for a renewed commitment to issue-based campaigning, disciplined leadership choices, and a clear focus on national development.
According to Dr. Bawumia, the party’s loss in the 2024 general elections was largely due to voter apathy in key strongholds, including Greater Accra, Ashanti, Eastern, Central, and Western Regions, where the NPP lost over two million votes compared to 2020.
He stated that if those regions had turned out in their numbers, the NPP would have retained power.
Dr. Bawumia outlined the qualities the NPP must seek in its next leader: vision, humility, incorruptibility, steadiness, emotional intelligence, experience, and critically, the ability to unite the party.
He also cautioned against reckless rhetoric, warning that undisciplined public comments could damage the NPP’s image and provide political ammunition to the opposition NDC.
“If we are fractured, none of us can cross over to lead this party to fulfil its purpose. Unity is the only way forward. With unity and consistency, we can regain the trust of Ghanaians and reclaim power in 2028,” he declared to resounding applause.
