A 70-year-old woman has lost her life after a fierce fire tore through a section of the Suame Industrial enclave in the Ashanti Region in the early hours of Saturday, May 16, 2026.

The deceased, Madam Bawama Naya, was trapped when flames swept through a cluster of mechanic shops and could not be rescued in time despite efforts to reach her. She was burnt to death at the scene.

Personnel from the Breman Fire Station received a distress call at approximately 3:22 am and swiftly mobilised a combined response team from the Breman and Komfo Anokye Fire Stations, led by Station Officer I Ampaabeng.

Crews arrived at the scene at around 3:34 am to find the fire already fully developed, having consumed three wooden structures, three metal containers, four vehicles, and nine DAF vehicle engines.

Firefighters battled the blaze for over an hour before bringing it under control. By then, property valued at millions of cedis had been destroyed.

The body of Madam Naya was subsequently handed over to officers of the Suame District Police Command for preservation and investigation.

Despite the scale of the destruction, firefighters successfully salvaged three Sprinter buses, one Mercedes-Benz bus, and one Opel bus from the flames.

The Ghana National Fire Service has launched an investigation into the origin and cause of the fire.

The Service took the opportunity to urge the public, particularly those operating within industrial and commercial zones, to adhere strictly to fire safety protocols to prevent similar tragedies.
